Jeff Ford’s posted a story called “Present From the Past” on his blog. I’m telling you, not asking you, to read it:

Reading this made me feel like I was on the heaving deck of a ship. Suddenly, work seems utterly inconsequential.

  1. What do you think about Medulla? I checked it out from our local library and thought she had some really cool ideas, but some of it (all the grunting, etc.) just didn’t work for me. Maybe I’ll give it another listen.

  2. First off, I should say I’ve had about a decade-long crush on Björk. Just to get that out there.

I really like “Medulla.” I read a review somewhere that said this might be music you’d hear drifting out from an insane asylum and that pretty much sums it up. It’s nothing I want to cuddle up with by the fire, but I really admire Björk’s willingness to experiment, and “Medulla” is one long experiment.

It’s best to half-listen to it, while you’re working or something. It’s too distracting to write or read while listening, and too obtuse to give it full attention, like you might on a long drive. I usually listen to it while I’m at work and every so often I stop what I’m doing to listen to a particular little bit that catches my attention.

Every Björk albums has a few duds for me. I think “Post” is my favorite, closely followed by “Debut,” but neither are perfect.
