Narcisstic Googling Reveals Interesting Results

Filed under: Writing — Trent @ 10:46 am

Every once in awhile I google myself to see what comes up and every so often I get a pleasant surprise or two.

Like the fact that Jim Henry put my story “From the Mouths of Babes” from F&SF March 2006 on his Hugo ballot. I don’t know Jim, but it’s nice to know he ranked my story up there with his favorites for the year.

Perhaps even more startling was the discovery that I’m being taught. My story “A Change of Seasons” which appeared in Sep/Oct issue of Cicada is being used in the curriculum of what I’m guessing is a middle school course. Check out this 1st page analysis and plot summary the students have to complete.

It’s a strange sensation to wake up on a random Saturday afternoon to discover you’re someone’s homework.

  1. There you are, walking around, eating a bagel — and suddenly feeling like a hundred angry eyes are glaring at you, hating your very being.

    Must be nice. (grin)

  2. Hey Trent! I’ve lurked on your blog for a while now– ever since Joy (Krummel) googled you and found it. I’m an English teacher (high school) and found that homework assignment to be very familiar. It must be amazing to see your own work used as a teaching tool! I assume you took Mr. Moeller’s (sp?)short stories class at Southwest. He must be very proud!

  3. Hi Jenna! Thanks for lurking!

It’s more strange than amazing to find out something I’ve written is being taught. It makes me feel like I almost know what I’m doing. And of course it’s a huge compliment.

I spoke with Mr. Moeller a few years back before I got anything published, and he was very encouraging. Maybe I should try to contact him again to let him know about recent developments…

Thanks for stopping by, and thanks for the comment!
